The Nissan RB26DETT and Toyota 2JZ-GTE are arguably the two most legendary engines to come out of Japan. Both have proven themselves capable of extraordinary power levels, but they have very different characteristics that make each better suited to certain builds.
The RB26DETT
Nissan's 2.6-liter twin-turbo inline-six was built for the Skyline GT-R (R32, R33, R34). It's a high-revving, responsive engine with an individual throttle body setup that gives it incredible throttle response.
Strengths
- Exceptional throttle response with ITBs
- Smooth power delivery through the rev range
- Iconic sound character
- Strong aftermarket support for up to 800hp on stock internals
Considerations
- Parts are becoming increasingly expensive and harder to source
- The stock bottom end has limits around 600-650hp without forged internals
- More complex than the 2JZ due to the twin-turbo and ITB setup
The 2JZ-GTE
Toyota's 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six from the MK4 Supra is renowned for its virtually unbreakable cast-iron block. It's the go-to choice for high-horsepower builds.
Strengths
- Legendary bottom-end strength, stock internals can handle 800hp+
- Simpler design makes it easier to work on
- Excellent parts availability and aftermarket support globally
- More displacement means more low-end torque
Considerations
- Heavier than the RB26
- Less refined throttle response compared to ITB setup
- Can feel less characterful at lower power levels
Cost Comparison
A used RB26DETT typically costs AED 15,000–30,000 depending on condition and mileage. The 2JZ-GTE ranges from AED 12,000–25,000. However, if you're building for big power (1,000hp+), the 2JZ will generally be cheaper to build because the stock bottom end can take more abuse.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose the RB26 if you want the authentic GT-R experience, prioritize throttle response, and are building for 500–800hp. Choose the 2JZ if you're chasing maximum horsepower, want easier maintenance, or are doing an engine swap into a different chassis.
Whichever way you go, the supporting parts matter as much as the block: turbochargers and intercoolers, a clutch that can hold the torque, and a standalone ECU to run it all. We stock all three.
