- Container shipping: More expensive but offers better protection. Ideal for high-value or already-restored vehicles. Expect AED 7,000–12,000 for a 20ft container.
Transit time from Japanese ports (Yokohama, Kobe, Nagoya) to Jebel Ali is typically 15–25 days.
Costs to Expect
Beyond the vehicle purchase price, budget for:
- 5% customs duty on the CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) value
- Shipping costs (as outlined above)
- Port handling and clearance fees (AED 500–1,500)
- Vehicle inspection and compliance testing
- Registration and insurance
- Any required modifications (LHD conversion, emissions compliance)
Buying at Japanese Auctions
Most JDM imports come through Japanese auction houses like USS, HAA, and CAA. These auctions grade vehicles on a detailed scale, and understanding the grading system is essential. Grade 4 and above generally indicates a car in good condition with minimal issues.
